The first thing you want to do is ask if they are licensed to practice in front of the IRS. There are three types of professionals that are able to do this: a licensed CPA, a licensed tax attorney, or a licensed enrolled agent.
If your tax relief professional is not any of these three things, they are not authorized to represent you.
Secondly, you want to take a look at their experience. How long have they been practicing? How many cases have they handled? How many of those cases did they win?
